Skin Checks
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN HAVING A FULL SKIN CHECK OR SPOT CHECK
Preparation
– Wear comfortable clothing that can easily be removed or to allow access to areas of concern
– Your skin should be free of makeup and any creams
– Come prepared with any questions or concerns about your skin so you remember to ask them during your consultation
During a skin check appointment
– Your doctor will likely ask you about your medical history, including any personal or family history of skin cancer, previous skin conditions, medications you’re taking, and your sun exposure habits.
– Your doctor will conduct a thorough examination of your skin, including areas not typically exposed to the sun.
– They will use a dermatoscope, a handheld device with magnification and light, to closely examine any suspicious lesions.
– If a suspicious area is identified, your doctor may recommend a biopsy to obtain a tissue sample for further evaluation.
– Treatment options will be discussed based on the biopsy results, and a follow-up plan may be established for regular skin monitoring
Overall, a skin check is a comprehensive evaluation of your skin’s health and serves as an opportunity to detect any potential skin cancer or other skin conditions early. It’s essential to have regular skin checks, especially if you have risk factors for skin cancer or notice any changes in your skin between appointments
